Hog Hammock Public Library
The Hog Hammock Public Library is on Sapelo Island, Georgia, in Historic Hog
Hammock, one of the last intact island-based Geechee/Gullah communities in
America. Sapelo Island, about seven miles offshore between Savannah and
Brunswick, is accessible only by state-run ferry or private boat.
Hog Hammock Public Library was founded in 2002 as an initiative of the Sapelo
Island Cultural and Revitalization Society Inc. (SICARS). It began as a small
collection of books in the SICARS office on the island. The library’s collection
grew, thanks to generous donations from island residents and visitors, and was
moved to the old schoolhouse down the road.
In the spring of 2006, the Hog Hammock Public Library became a separate
nonprofit organization. The library was dedicated as an affiliate of the Three
Rivers Regional Library System in December 2006.
