Charlton Public Library, Inc.
Interest in a public library for the people of Charlton
County probably began in 1911 when the school made their library available to
everyone. Then the Folkston Women’s Civic Club and Folkston Junior Women’s Club
for many years promoted the library, acquiring books as the years went by. A
County Library Board was created in 1970 at the April meeting of the County
Commissioners, acting under the authority of Georgia law. In 1971 a brick
building was constructed on Cypress Street, as a result of the leadership of
Mr. William Mizell, Jr., who donated the land and Mrs. Elizabeth Majors and Mrs.
Elizabeth “Betty” Lester, who devoted much time and energy to this undertaking.
The 10 by 50 feet structure cost just over $10,000.00 and was dedicated on
December 05, 1971. The library outgrew this building and the present
structure was constructed in 1995 and dedicated in 1996.
